| Volunteer Opportunities at Resurrection: |
Items for Donation: |
| Resurrection has provided volunteers for over 15 years, making and serving the supper meal on the second Saturday of each month. Volunteers provide one of three food items (salad, main dish, dessert) to serve 20 people and drop it off at Resurrection or bring it directly to the Dorothy Day House after 4 pm. Then 2-3 volunteers serve the meal, visit with guests and clean up. The time commitment for servers is from 5-7 pm. |
There is a coninuous need for donations of coffee, alarm clocks, twin size sheets, towels, paper products, detergents, and money for expenses. |
| History of the Organization: |
| The Dorothy Day Hospitality House opened in Rochester on November 1, 1984 in a small house on 2nd Street (now the McDonald’s parking lot). It soon became apparent that the need was greater than projected. A move to a house owned by Christ United Church at 420 Fifth Ave. S.W. was made. There 12 guests could be accommodated. When expansion at the church meant the razing of that house, DDHH moved to the convent at St. Francis Church. Neighbors and parishioners were not happy to have a shelter nearby. To avoid friction, it was decided to purchase a home and establish a permanent haven for those in need. The current Dorothy Day Hospitality House on 1st Street SW in Rochester opened on Nov. 1, 1989. |
| Other Volunteer Opportunities |
| They can use help in other areas as well: to wake guests from 7-9 am. and close the house for the day, welcome new guests and visit from 4-7 pm or 7-9:30 pm, share carpentry, plumbing, or electrical skills, and help with daytime cleaning between 9 am until 4 pm. Call the house at 282-5172 to discuss volunteering. |
